Researchers have discovered that remdesivir and its metabolite GS-441524 are effective against the feline coronavirus strains causing the often fatal feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). GS-441524 is the principal metabolite of remdesivir, with a half-life of approximately 24 hours in humans.
White blood cells are integral in fighting off viruses and generating antibodies to prevent replication; however, cats with immune defects or deficiencies are unable to do this. Consequently, the coronavirus is able to replicate and spread into the cat's body causing either wet or dry types of FIP.
GS441524 works as an analog that carries out RNA dependent RNA polymerase, preventing the virus from replicating and allowing the immune system of the cat to destroy the virus. This stops it from doing any harm.
